General Description Eventually the first Cistercian Monastery to be founded in Portugal, the monastery of São Cristóvão de Lafões (St. Christopher of Lafoes) dates from 1138 /1140 and was rebuilt in its present form in the end of the 17th century. Its unique setting on a high point overlooking a tight bend in the Varoso river, surrounded by wooded hillsides, endows it with a sense of refuge, sought after by the monks who founded it to escape wordliness, and sought after today by those seeking refuge from the bustle, pace and wordliness of modern life. The monastery itself and associated outbuildings have been restored to a high standard of modern comfort whilst retaining the original style of the building, making architecturally decorative features of many of the building’s initial equipment, such as the granite feed troughs of the former stables which are brought to life as glass-topped bedside tables or bathroom features. Beautiful embroidered linen adds a touch of sophistication. The atmosphere is one of tranquility and seclusion in the midst of nature. Notwithstanding, due to the proximity of main roads, full day excursions to Porto, Viseu, Coimbra, the beaches of Aveiro and Douro Valley are easy to manage by car.
